Parents play a vital role
in effective career guidance.
Effective career development is all about helping your children and young adults understand themselves better: their personal interests, likes and dislikes. As career development experts, we find the wide range of study options available to youg people so exciting, but for you, parents and your teenagers, overwhelming and confusing is more accurate description. We understand this.
CareerFocusNZ will help parents understand the career guidance steps they can take to give their teenagers the support they need. A parent’s input into their child’s future is integral to a positive start in life. Teenagers will grow in confidence if they feel empowered to make their own decisions, supported in their career choices and have confidence in future opportunities.
Consultations are available fae to face, mobile or on Skype if you live outside Northland.

“Muriel at CareerFocusNZ has been wonderful and so passionate with helping both my children with subject choice and helping find direction with further study. She listened and was able to help them select career options. Her advice regarding university, what’s involved, where to go, what they offer, has been invaluable.
I would not hesitate to highly recommend Muriel; she is very down to earth, easy to talk to, great at her job and loves what she does.” Jenni Higgins
Helping young adults become resilient
As adults, we know that sometimes finding employment can take perseverance. We can support you to help maximise your son or daughter’s resilience if facing disappointment. Searching for employment often entails numerous knockbacks: helping them deal with rejection in a healthy and character-building way is all part of the path towards successful employment. We also coach the important skills of job searching and writing a strong CV which are skills they will remember and use again and again throughout their career.
Choosing the right path – knowing what’s best for your teenager’s future
You may feel that your son or daughter is too young to know what’s best for his or her future. As a parent, there is so much that you can do to support them as they take those first steps towards a career decision. CareerFocusNZ will empower you and your child in the transition towards employment or further education.
Currently, the governement is offering young people one year fees-free for tertiary studies or two years for an apprenticeship programme. There is also accomodation and living expenses which can be a huge expense and are not covered by this subsidy.
Fortunately, there are many scholarships available each year both from tertiary institutions and from the community. Muriel can also suport you with searching for scholarships your teenagers might be elligible for. This could make all the difference to their future pathway and your wallet!
“Muriel is so helpful, understanding and in tune with all the questions you or your teens might have about funding and scholarships. I highly recommend her.” H.P
